Alexander Gibson was born on February 11, 1926, in Motherwell, Scotland. He
studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and later received a
scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. Gibson served as Assistant
Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra from 1952 to 1954 and was
appointed musical director of Sadler's Wells in 1957. In 1959, he became the
first Scottish principal conductor and artistic director of the Scottish
