Barry Gray, born John Livesey Eccles in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, on July
18, 1908, was an English composer and arranger. Encouraged in music from age 5,
he studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music and under Hungarian composer
Mátyás Seiber before joining music publisher B. Feldman & Co. in London to
arrange theatre and variety scores. After serving 6 years in the Royal Air Force
during World War II, he worked as an arranger and accompanist for Vera Lynn and
