Bert Kalmar, born on February 10, 1884, in New York City, was an American Jewish
songwriter. He began his career in vaudeville as a performer before
transitioning to songwriting after a knee injury. Kalmar co-founded the music
publishing company Kalmar and Puck, collaborating with various songwriters
including Harry Ruby. By 1918, Kalmar and Ruby formed a permanent partnership,
writing the musical score for the Marx Brothers' Animal Crackers (1928) and its
