Clarence Horatius "Big" Miller, born on December 18, 1923, in Sioux City, Iowa,
was an American jazz and blues singer and trombonist. After studying trombone
and bass, he joined the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and later the Jay McShann
Orchestra, where his vocal talent emerged. His 1958 performance at the Newport
Jazz Festival brought national attention, leading to a New York session with Bob
Brookmeyer’s ensemble. His solo album, Did You Ever Hear the Blues? (1959), was
followed by Revelations and the Blues (1961) and Sings, Twists, Shouts and
