Claudia Cardinale, born Claude Joséphine Rose Cardinale on April 15, 1938, in
Tunis, La Goulette (French Tunisia), was an Italian actress and singer. She
began her career as a teenager, appearing in the short film Les Anneaux d’or in
1955. Her breakthrough came after winning a beauty contest in 1957, which led to
her discovery by filmmakers at the Venice Film Festival. Cardinale gained
prominence with her role in Rocco and His Brothers (Luchino Visconti, 1960) and
achieved international recognition through her performances in 8½ (Federico
