José del Refugio Sánchez Saldaña, known as Cuco Sánchez, was born on May 3,
1921, in Altamira, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He began his career as a
singer-songwriter and actor after moving to Santiago Tulyehualco, Ciudad de
México with his mother and brother following his father's departure for military
service. Initially working as a shepherd, Sánchez started writing poetry and
composing melodies, eventually adopting the stage name Cuco Sánchez in 1937. His
