David Eugene Lewis was an American rock and R&B keyboardist and vocalist born in
1938 in Texas and based in Seattle. He began playing the piano after being
influenced by the music of Ray Charles and achieved prominence with the Dave
Lewis Combo. The ensemble performed as the house band at the Seattle club
Birdland where they popularized the song “Louie Louie”. Lewis later switched to
the Hammond B-3 organ and formed a trio that released the singles “David's Mood
