Donald Ross Cherry, known as Don Cherry, was born on January 11, 1924, in
Wichita Falls, Texas. After studying voice post-military service, he began his
singing career in the late 1940s with orchestras led by Jan Garber, Tommy
Dorsey, and Victor Young. His breakthrough came in 1950 with "Mona Lisa", which
reached number 10. That year, his single "Thinking Of You" peaked at number 4 on
the US charts. Cherry signed with Decca Records and later moved to Columbia
Records, achieving his biggest commercial success with "Band Of Gold" in 1955,
