Starting out as a hip-hop producer in the 1980s, Carl Stephenson's career-high came in 1993 after he co-wrote and co-produced Beck's 1993 hit song "Loser". He also played a huge part in creating Beck's 1994 major-label triumph Mellow Gold. However, Stephenson forged his own path as Forest for the Trees, releasing an eponymous album of experimental indie-rock in 1997 that contained the lead single, "Dream". The track made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 and follow-up EP, The Sound of Wet Paint, came in 1999.
