Gary Ray Grubb was an American guitarist and singer born on September 4, 1946,
in San Diego. Known professionally as Gary Duncan, he reached wider visibility
as a member of the ensemble the Brogues before co-founding the psychedelic rock
band Quicksilver Messenger Service in 1965. Duncan’s musical style was defined
by complex guitar interplay with the musician John Cipollina. His recording
career with the group included the studio recordings Quicksilver Messenger
