Don Fleming, long an enlightened producer on the independent scene (Posies,
Sonic Youth), is a figure of American underground rock. With Gumball, he
perpetuates the iconoclastic spirit that characterized the sixties and the great
punk era, while taking advantage of contemporary technology and humorously
reusing old pop sounds. On the albums Wisconsin Hayride (1992) and Super Tasty
(1993), the band distills a noisy music unabashedly tending towards grunge,
