James Hal Kemp, known professionally as Hal Kemp, was born on March 27, 1904, in
Marion, Alabama. He led his first jazz group, the Carolina Club Orchestra, while
studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1927, Kemp
formed his own orchestra, which later signed with Brunswick Records. During the
Great Depression, Kemp shifted his band's style to a dance-oriented sound.
Kemp's band was highly popular in the 1930s, appearing regularly on radio shows.
Notable songs include "Got A Date With An Angel" and Heart Of Stone". He also
had Number 1 hits with "There's a S...
