Harvey Danger was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1992 by Aaron Huffman and Jeff J. Lin, both journalism students at the University of Washington; the band’s lineup was solidified in 1993 when drummer Evan Sult and vocalist Sean Nelson joined. The group released a self‑produced demo tape in 1994, followed by the Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? album on July 29, 1997, which achieved Gold certification in 1999 after the single "Flagpole Sitta" entered the Top 40 and received heavy rotation on MTV and VH1; the track also featured in the 1999 film American Pie.
