Helium was an American alternative rock band from Boston, formed in 1992. The
group was fronted by Mary Timony and originally performed under the name Chupa.
The band's lineup settled as a trio consisting of Timony, Shawn King Devlin, and
Brian Dunton. Helium released its debut single “The American Jean” (1992) before
signing with Matador Records. Its first EP Pirate Prude was released (1994),
followed by the debut studio album The Dirt of Luck (1995). The group toured
extensively and performed on the second stage of Lollapalooza in 1995. Its final
