William Holly Johnson was born in Liverpool on February 9, 1960. After playing
bass with the legendary band Big in Japan from 1977 to 1979, he became leader of
the Frankie Goes to Hollywood phenomenon in 1980, under the guidance of producer
Trevor Horn. When the group split up in 1987, he went platinum with his album
Blast (1989). Starting out in synthpop, Holly Johnson gradually turned to house
and dance, as his popularity waned and the discovery of his HIV-positive status
