Irwin Kostal, born October 1, 1911, in Chicago, Illinois, was an American musical arranger and orchestrator. After self‑studying orchestral scores at his local library, he secured his first professional role as a staff arranger for the NBC radio program Design for Listening, and later worked on Your Show of Shows and The Garry Moore Show. Kostal transitioned to film and Broadway in the late 1950s, orchestrating Shinbone Alley, The Music Man, Fiorello!, and West Side Story, which led to the 1961 screen adaptation; the score team won an Academy Award and a Grammy.
