Joanne Brackeen

Joanne Grogan Brackeen, known as JoAnne Brackeen, and born on July 26, 1938 in Ventura, California, is a jazz pianist and music education. She began playing piano at age nine and was influenced by Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. At 12, she performed with her friend Joanne Zerwig. In the late 1950s, she worked with Teddy Edwards, Dexter Gordon, Charles Lloyd, and Charles Brackeen, whom she married. She moved to New York in 1965 and played with Freddie McCoy, Woody Shaw, Dave Liebman, and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from 1969 to 1972. Her debut album as a leader was Snooze (1975). ...
