John Duffey
John Humbird Duffey Jr. was American bluegrass musician born in Washington,
D.C., on March 4, 1934. He grew up in the Washington area and learned to play
mandolin, dobro, and guitar, performing with a unique singing voice that spanned
from tenor to falsetto. In 1957, he co-founded the band The Country Gentlemen
with Charlie Waller, initially filling in for other musicians at the radio
station WFMD. The group established their presence in bluegrass with studio
recordings including Folk Songs & Bluegrass (1961) and Bluegrass at Carnegie
