John Livingston Eaton, born on May 29, 1934, was an American pianist,
musicologist, humorist, educator, and interpreter of jazz and American popular
music. Eaton first performed with Wild Bill Davison at 22, later working with
notable pianists such as Teddy Wilson and George Shearing. After serving in the
military, he led his own ensemble and joined Tommy Gwaltney’s trio in the
mid‑1960s. From 1968 to 1972, he played in the house trio at the Blues Alley
