John Engels, born on May 13, 1935, in Groningen, the Netherlands, is a Dutch
jazz drummer from a musical family. His professional career began in 1953.
Throughout his career, he accompanied notable jazz musicians such as Stan Getz,
Ben Webster, and Wynton Marsalis. In 1986-1987, he toured Japan with Chet Baker.
Engels has played on over 140 albums, nine of which have won the Edison Prize.
He received the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 1985 and was
appointed a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau by Queen Beatrix in 2001. His
