John Mehegan, born on June 6, 1920, in Wethersfield, Connecticut, was an
American jazz pianist who began playing piano at the age of five. He started
performing around 1940 and moved to New York City in 1941. In 1945, Mehegan
formed a quartet with Billy Moore, Al Hall, and Jimmy Crawford, recording for
Savoy. He became head of the jazz department at the Metropolitan School of Music
in 1946 and also taught at the Juilliard School and Yale University. During the
1950s, his most active period as a performer, he recorded albums such as
