John Bernard Riley was born on 6 June 1954 in Aberdeen, Maryland and began
playing drums at age eight. He studied privately with Thomas Sicola, Jr. before
enrolling at the University of North Texas College of Music, where he performed
with the One O'Clock Lab Band and appeared on the Grammy‑nominated Lab 76. Over
the following decades, he collaborated with artists such as Miles Davis,
Dizzy Gillespie, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He has also appeared on
