John Simmons
John Jacob Simmons, known professionally as John Simmons, was an American jazz
double bassist. Born on June 14, 1918, in Haskell, Oklahoma, he grew up in Tulsa
and California. He began his musical journey as a trumpeter before a football
injury led him to play the double bass, which he learned to play in a short
time. He played in the early Nat King Cole Trio and recorded with Teddy Wilson
in Los Angeles in 1937, featuring on the singles “Ain't Misbehavin’” and
“Honeysuckle Rose”. Simmons moved to Chicago, performing with bands led by Roy
