Judy Clay, born Judith Grace Guions on September 12, 1938 in St. Pauls, North
Carolina, was an American soul and gospel singer. Clay sang in her church choir
as a child, moved to Harlem as a teenager, and joined The Drinkard Singers at
age 13. Her first recording appeared on the album The Newport Spiritual Stars in
1957, after which Clay issued early singles with Ember Records that did not
chart. In 1967, Clay signed with Stax Records and teamed with Billy Vera on
