Kermit the Frog is an American Muppet character created by Jim Henson in 1955 on the local Washington, D.C. program Sam and Friends. After early appearances on Sam and Friends, his status as a frog was firmly established in the 1969 television special Hey, Cinderella!. Kermit's musical breakthrough came with the 1970 single "Bein' Green" on Sesame Street, followed in 1979 by the hit "Rainbow Connection" from The Muppet Movie, which reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry in 2021.
