Lawrence Mervil Tibbett, born on November 16, 1896, in Bakersfield, California,
was an opera singer and recording artist. He began his career as a singer,
performing in church choirs and at funerals. In 1923, at the age of 26, Tibbett
signed his first contract with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. His
notable roles included Valentin in Faust, Silvio and Tonio in Pagliacci, and the
King's Herald in Lohengrin. He achieved national recognition playing Ford in
