Mary Jane West, known as Mae West, was born on August 17, 1893, in Brooklyn, New York. She began her career debuting in amateur theater at seven years old. By 14, she began performing professionally in vaudeville in the Hal Clarendon Stock Company. In 1927, West was arrested for "corrupting the morals of youth" with her play Sex, which led to ten days in jail but also significant publicity.
