Malan
Ma Lan was born on 23 April 1962 in Taihu County, Anhui, China, and trained as a
Huangmei opera singer. After graduating from the Anhui Art School in 1980, she
joined the Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre. She later gained recognition for
portrayals of classic characters such as Jia Baoyu in Dream of the Red Chamber
and Zhu Yingtain in the Butterfly Lovers. Ma Lan’s breakthrough came with her
1987 performance of Yan Fengying, earning the Plum Blossom Award that year. She
