Max Lorenz, born Max Sülzenfuß on 10 May 1901 in Düsseldorf, was a German
operatic tenor who pursued a career in classical music after leaving his family
butcher business. He studied under Max Pauli in Cologne and Ernst Grenzebach in
Berlin, winning a competition at the Berlin Philharmonic in December 1926, which
secured a contract with the Dresden State Opera where he debuted on
5 September 1927 as Walther von der Vogelweide in Tannhäuser. Lorenz
