The Münchner Rundfunkorchester (Munich Radio Orchestra) is a German radio
symphony orchestra based in Munich, Germany, formed in 1952 as the second
orchestral ensemble of Bayerischer Rundfunk to focus on light music (gehobene
Unterhaltungsmusik). Under first chief conductor Werner Schmidt-Boelcke
(1952–1967), the orchestra established the Sonntagskonzerte concert series.
Subsequent chief conductors expanded the repertoire: Kurt Eichhorn (1967–1975)
introduced the Münchner Funkkonzert series in 1967 focusing on lesser-known
