Dominic Antonio Nicholas Lucanese, born August 22, 1897 in Newark, New Jersey,
was an American jazz singer and guitarist known professionally as Nick Lucas.
After learning mandolin in his youth, Lucas recorded for Thomas Edison's
phonograph company in 1912, later gaining renown with the instrumental hits
“Pickin' the Guitar” and “Teasin' the Frets” in 1922 for Pathé. Lucas signed
with Brunswick Records in 1923, recording as an exclusive artist until 1932, and
introduced the hit songs “Painting the Clouds with Sunshine” and the Number 1
