Noura Mint Seymali, born in 1979 in Nouakchott, Mauritania, is a singer and
instrumentalist from a family of griots. She began her career at the age of 13
as a backup singer for her stepmother, Dimi Mint Abba, a prominent Mauritanian
musician. Seymali plays the ardîn, a traditional string instrument, and started
composing for her stepmother before forming her own group in 2004 with her
