The destiny of Omar Souleyman, born in a Syrian village in 1966, took an
unexpected turn when this wedding singer was discovered and launched to an
international audience. A fixture at major festivals, the mustachioed musician
in sunglasses revealed to Western ears his explosive blend of popular dabka
music and electro on the albums Highway to Hassake (2007), Dabke 2020 (2009) and
