singer and actor. He was raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he cut his teeth
singing in church choirs before making his Broadway debut at the age of 18 in
the production of Hair in 1968. His role in this show marked a significant
breakthrough, as he became known for his lead vocal performance on the hippie
