An idol of the yé-yé era, singer Sheila extended her hit-filled career into
French variety in the 1970s, then into disco, only to enjoy a resurgence of
interest in the 2010s. Born into modest circumstances in Créteil on August 16,
1945, Annie Chancel sang in an amateur group, Les Guitares Brothers, before
being spotted by producer Claude Carrère, who commissioned her to record French
versions of Anglo-Saxon hits such as Tommy Roe's "Sheila" (1962), which earned
