Frederick Earl "Shorty" Long, born on May 20, 1940, in Birmingham, Alabama, is
an American soul singer. He began his music career with Tri-Phi/Harvey label
before joining Motown's Soul Records imprint in 1963. His first release for
Motown was "Devil with the Blue Dress On" (1964), which, although it did not
chart nationally, was covered by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels in 1966.
Long's breakthrough came with his 1966 single "Function at the Junction",
reaching number 42 on the US Billboard R&B chart. Other notable releases
