SOK was an East German jazz-rock ensemble that emerged in 1971, at a time when
the fusion of jazz and rock was still relatively new in the GDR. Led by pianist
and composer Ulrich Gumpert, the group featured an accomplished lineup that
included drummer Günter “Baby” Sommer and saxophonist Helmut Forsthoff. They
released a self-titled album in 1994, blending electric instruments and a horn
section with experimental passages that sometimes moved toward free jazz. SOK
