Sonia Margarita Silvestre Ortiz, known as Sonia Silvestre, was born on August 16, 1952, in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic. She began her musical journey in Santo Domingo and started her career as a vocalist in the early 1970s, debuting on Radio Televisión Dominicana's program "Gente" with the song "Yo sin ti". Her breakthrough came when she performed "¿Dónde podré gritarte que te quiero?" at the IV Festival de la Canción Dominicana in 1971.
