Donnell Clyde Cooley, known professionally as Spade Cooley, was an American
Western swing bandleader, fiddler, and actor born in Grand, Oklahoma, on
December 17, 1910. Being of Cherokee descent, Cooley attended the Chemawa Indian
School in Salem, Oregon, in his youth. Cooley adopted the nickname Spade after
winning a poker game with three straight flush hands in spades. He joined Jimmy
Wakely's band as a fiddler and eventually replaced Wakely as bandleader.
Cooley's breakthrough came with the single “Shame on You” (1945), which reached
