Toña "La Negra"
Antonia del Carmen Peregrino Álvarez, born November 2, 1912, in Veracruz,
Mexico, debuted at the El Retiro cabaret in 1929, where she was renamed Toña la
Negra. She began to gain attention for her interpretation of Agustín Lara’s
"Enamorada" and later recorded singles such as "Bongó" and "El cacahuatero" for
RCA Victor. She also performed regularly on XEW radio and at the Teatro
Politeama, while expanding her repertoire with Lara’s compositions like "Lamento
