Turk Murphy
Melvin Edward Alton "Turk" Murphy was an American trombonist and bandleader
known for his contributions to traditional and Dixieland jazz. Born on December
16, 1915, he served in the Navy during World War II, playing and recording with
Lu Watters and Bunk Johnson. He formed his own band in 1949, which in 1952
included pianist Wally Rose and clarinetist Bob Helm. The band gained prominence
playing at San Francisco's Italian Village club and appeared on The Ed Sullivan
