James Edgar Spruill, known as Wild Jimmy Spruill, was born on June 9, 1934, in
Fayetteville, North Carolina. He began playing guitar with a cigar box guitar
and later moved to New York City in 1955 to start his career as a session
guitarist. His breakthrough came in May 1959 when "The Happy Organ" by Dave
"Baby" Cortez reached Number 1 on the Billboard pop chart, featuring Spruill's
guitar solo. He also played on Wilbert Harrison’s "Kansas City", which also hit
